I am a biologist and a naturalist.
I understand, at least on a basic level, how iridescence works.
I understand that it can be created structurally or through diffraction.
I understand that it is the inevitable result of light hitting a certain type of surface.
I understand that it is simply physics.
But I don't care.
As I watched a male Anna's Hummingbird turn his head toward me today, I could only think of one word to describe what I was seeing.
Magic.

kevin, i think you should use this gif as a lead-in to a piece that describes the physics of iridescence. there are plenty of people out there who don;t understand how it works, but a hummingbird teaser combined with a cogent explanation will really stick in peoples' memories.
